Gatlinburg, TN Fires

December 6, 2016

Our hearts and prayers have been with our neighbors in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in their time of great need during the recent fires. Hope Force International has been in direct communication with Alexander Farmer, a state representative of the greater Gatlinburg / Sevier County area, with regard to offering assistance to those impacted by recent fires. He was encouraged to receive our offer and has reached out to the Mayor of Gatlinburg and the County Mayor, alerting them to HFI’s readiness to serve in any capacity. We discussed the probable need for trained disaster chaplains and have offered our help in the area of emotional and spiritual care.

Considering the devastation and loss of life from the firestorm that ravaged the greater Gatlinburg, TN area, it is only natural that the hearts of people are moved and want to help. During the course of this tragic event, the immediate need experienced by survivors is for a safe place to stay and to have meals provided. Sheltering and feeding operations typically fall under the purview of the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and at times, the Southern Baptists. At this stage, the number of people staying in shelters has dropped drastically. Most people are with family, friends, or have received assistance for temporary housing.

Of all natural disasters -- fires provide the most limited opportunity for volunteers who are not actually trained in fire-fighting. HFI remains ready should our offer of assistance be accepted. Please keep the people of Gatlinburg in your prayers.
