Reservists Deploying - Hurricane Irene Response

August 27, 2011

DSCN0802As Hurricane Irene makes its destructive rampage up the East Coast of the United States, Hope Force International continues to mobilize in preparation for much-needed relief and recovery efforts. According to HFI staffer Sue Duby, "We already have close to 30 Reservists standing by, ready to go the East Coast! Today the teams are coming together in conjunction with our national partner, The Salvation Army, and they will all move out Sunday morning to the areas of greatest need. All of those signed up so far are 'gold star' Reservists -- seasoned, quality participants."

Salvation Army Deployment Pathway for HFI Reservists:

There will likely be ongoing opportunities for Hope Force International (HFI) Reservists to be deployed through our partnership with The Salvation Army (TSA). This requires a two-week commitment (two travel days, 12 work days). Those deploying will work mostly with the mobile feeding/hydration units, while some will work in the Chaplaincy / Emotional & Spiritual Care side of things. Conditions will be challenging and work demanding with very long days. Please contact Sue Duby if you can participate. *

*Hope Force International is a national partner of the Salvation Army, with a signed Memorandum of Understanding that provides a protocol for partnership in times of significant disaster events.

Hope Force International Deployment Pathway for HFI Reservists:

TeamOpportunities to serve for one day or longer are also expected in the days ahead. Based upon past experience, HFI anticipates that many survivors will require assistance with the application of tarps for wind-damaged roofs. This is a critical step in helping to mitigate further water-related damage to home and personal belongings, and helps to alleviate emotional stress for the survivor. This process needs to be done correctly to ensure durability while waiting for repairs to be completed. We will likely be involved in debris removal and clean up, and potentially flood-related recovery efforts. Those with Chaplaincy and Emotional & Spiritual Care experience will be needed as well.

Currently, we have a team in Pennsylvania poised to identify our target area and to mount the first wave of our response. Once HFI determines this location, additional volunteer help will likely be needed.  Reservists willing and able to serve should consider the fact that this will be labor intensive and without many, if any, amenities. We will be roughing it. You can join us for one day or longer, as your schedule permits.  WE NEED YOUR HELP AND WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU ON THE TEAM! Please contact Sue Duby if you can participate.
